The TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 has been underway, and two matches each have been played by the franchises. Ahead of the third match rounds, a controversial incident occurred during the first match of the double header on Sunday, 5th April 2026. The incident occurred during the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) vs Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) match. Avesh Khan, LSG's pace bowler, has always been in the headlines for his controversial celebrations and incidents during the IPL. Now he was involved in hitting a ball from outside the boundary rope before the ball touched the fence. This happened during the second last ball of the 19th over of SRH, when 1 needed off 2 balls, Rishabh Pant smacked Jaydev Unadkat over the mid off. However, even before the ball reached the boundary, Avesh was caught hitting the ball while he was standing outside padded up to bat next. It was claimed that the ball had not crossed the ropes, and a section of social media even argued that SRH should be awarded five penalty runs. A fan stated that the umpires should apply Law 20.1 (Dead Ball) and Law 41 (Unfair Play). According to MCC Law 20.4.2, the delivery might have been declared a dead ball because of interference in play by someone beyond the field of play. However, nothing such happened during the game. Avesh Khan might have got a lucky escape, or is SRH management going to file a complaint against the pacer and the umpire to the IPL governing council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)? It is debatable whether the match officials ignored the incident or found nothing incorrect. With cameras in place, it is doubtful that the problem would have gone unnoticed. One probable reason for this is that there was no SRH player near the boundary line, and Avesh Khan's action did not prevent any fielder from stopping the ball from reaching the boundary. If Avesh Khan did the immature action while any fielder was chasing the ball or trying to chase the ball, then it would have surely been called into question, as the immature behaviour from an experienced international player is not expected in the best league in the world. Avesh Khan needs to understand the seriousness of the game and not just have fun around. As per reports from Cricbuzz, during the first match, SRH batter Heinrich Klaasen was dismissed after a controversial catch of Phil Salt, which was taken at the boundary line. It was visible that the England wicket-keeper batter for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) had some part touched the Toblerones, but the Proteas batter was given out. SRH management were unhappy with the incident, and they have also been furious with the catch of Varun Chakravarthy during the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match, where Abhishek Sharma was dismissed, as it was a controversial catch with the Orange Army management believing that the ball touched the ground. "Although neither the dismissals nor the results will be overturned, sources say the franchise is likely to knock on the doors of the BCCI if they have not already," the report read.
