Mumbai: In a move that promises to redefine the global cricketing landscape, Maharashtra is fast-tracking the development of a huge 100,000-capacity cricket stadium. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) with full state government backing, aims to create India's second-largest cricket stadium right in the heart of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The initiative marks a massive leap in sports infrastructure, designed to accommodate the exploding demand of cricket fans that the historic but smaller Wankhede Stadium can no longer satisfy. The roadmap for this "Mega-Arena" was solidified following high-level discussions between MCA President Ajinkya Naik and CIDCO Managing Director Vijay Singhal. The stadium will be situated in the rapidly expanding Navi Mumbai area. Naik cited the region's excellent connectivity and proximity to the upcoming international airport as the primary reasons for selecting this "ideal" location. The project follows a vision set forth by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in May 2025. Fadnavis had publicly promised to allot land to the MCA for a 1-lakh capacity stadium after a request from Naik and the late MCA president, Amol Kale. Joining the ranks of Wankhede, Brabourne, and the existing DY Patil Stadium, this new facility will cement Mumbai's status as the world's premier cricket hub. Currently, the Wankhede Stadium, the primary home of international cricket in Mumbai, has a capacity of just 33,108. With ticket demand for IPL and international matches frequently exceeding supply by hundreds of thousands, the MCA is desperate for a venue that can accommodate the masses.
