12 Guwahati: Twenty-four hours after N Biren Singh relinquished his position as the chief minister of Manipur, his party, BJP, remains unable to establish a consensus replacement amid day-long closed-door deliberations in Imphal, heightening the likelihood of President's Rule being imposed in the strife-torn state. Extensive consultations between BJP's in-charge for northeast Sambit Patra, senior party leaders, and prospective candidates for the CM's post have yielded no definitive resolution, while political uncertainty continues to pervade the administrative corridors. A party source said a consensus name is expected to emerge by Wednesday, as more meetings will be held, either within the state or outside. Former Manipur assembly speaker and current cabinet minister, Y Khemchand, who is one of the frontrunners for the CM's office, said after his one-to-one meeting with Patra that the party high command's choice will be accepted by all MLAs. Khemchand said he discussed with Patra how to bring back peace to the state. "Isn't it what everyone in Manipur would love to have? I too want this," he added. When asked about Biren Singh's resignation on Sunday, Khemchand said, "The decision was taken by the high command and we accept it." On who would be the next chief minister, he said, "That's decided by the party high command." When asked if he was one of the probable candidates, he said, "As per the party system, whatever the party high command decides, we have to accept, no matter who is selected. You may have heard from others (on the probable CMs), but this is the way... whatever is decided by the high command will be accepted by all the members." He added that he has no idea when this decision will be made. Patra also met assembly speaker Thokchom Satyabrata, another critic of Biren Singh, besides minister Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh and MLA Th Radheshyam. Meanwhile, Manipur Congress president K Meghachandra welcomed Singh's resignation but opposed any move to impose President's Rule in the state. "For the people of Manipur, the Congress party opposes any move to impose President's Rule in Manipur now and also opposes any move to place Manipur legislative assembly under suspended animation. The Congress party wants a democratically elected popular govt in Manipur in the larger interests of safeguarding democracy in the state," he said.
