New Delhi, April 1 (UNI) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday launched a sharp critique of the Modi government, alleging that its economic policies have led to a rise in the cost of essential goods and services, placing a growing burden on ordinary citizens. In a post on X, Kharge claimed that the government has "severely damaged the country's strategic and economic policies," adding that the impact is being felt by "1.4 billion Indians." He said that from today, prices of several everyday essentials are set to increase, affecting households and small businesses alike. Highlighting specific sectors, Kharge pointed to a steep rise in the cost of commercial LPG cylinders and alleged shortages on the ground. "From tea at roadside eateries to mid-day meals, everything will be adversely affected," he said, indicating that the price hike could ripple through food services and welfare schemes. He also flagged an increase in air turbine fuel prices, claiming it would make air travel less affordable. "Air travel has become unaffordable, even for those who once relied on budget flying," Kharge said, while also criticising the removal of price caps. The Congress leader further alleged that over 900 essential medicines have become more expensive, raising concerns about healthcare affordability. "The cost of treatment has increased further," he said, adding that prices of coronary stents have also gone up. In addition, he said that price hikes in materials such as plastic goods, steel and ceramics would have a cascading effect on multiple sectors. "PVC pipes used by farmers have become costlier, bitumen prices have risen by up to 50%, and the construction sector is under significant pressure," he stated. Accusing the ruling BJP of neglecting key sections of society, Kharge said, "At a time when the common people, farmers, workers and MSME industries are struggling and hoping for relief, the BJP leadership is ignoring them and focusing instead on exploiting the public and profiteering during difficult times."
