New Delhi: A six-fold increase in the budget for the regional connectivity scheme Udan will boost access to smaller towns and drive demand for smaller aircraft, potentially spurring local manufacturing, civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu told ET. "Major aerospace companies like Embraer and Leonardo are in the process of setting up manufacturing lines in India and through schemes like Udan, the government will take every step to promote and facilitate these initiatives," Naidu said in an interview. The cabinet last week approved a Rs 28,840-crore plan to revamp regional air connectivity over the next decade, which includes developing 100 new airports and 200 helipads. Air connectivity will give a boost to the economy of smaller towns, Naidu said. "The increased demand will further make more business sense in local manufacturing in India for regional aircraft," he added. Adani Group and Embraer recently joined hands to set up an assembly line for E175 regional jets. It would be the first such facility for commercial aircraft in India. Among many changes in the revamped scheme, the government will provide financial support to airlines for a period of five years, up from current three years, and provide maintenance support to remote airports. Government officials said increasing the subsidy period will make the scheme more effective as smaller airlines, which are substantial players in remote connectivity, take longer time to start flights due to non-availability of aircraft or readiness of the airport. It becomes a big financial burden for them. Naidu said the face of aviation has changed in India as it's no longer seen as a mode of transport for the elite class. "This is becoming an important mode of transport for the common man," he said, noting that many people from tier-II and tier-III cities are travelling by air for the first time. "As part of Viksit Bharat 2047, we are trying to build the aviation sector so that it reaches far and remote corners of the country with 350 airports by 2047," the minister said. "We have set up Udan Yatri cafes in over 30 airports, where flyers get affordable options for food."
