New Delhi: Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday told the Lok Sabha that train passengers must pay charges for carrying luggage beyond the prescribed free allowance. Replying to a question by TD MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, the minister said the Railways already follow class-wise limits for luggage carried by passengers inside compartments. Second Class passengers are allowed 35 kg free and up to 70 kg on a chargeable basis, while Sleeper Class passengers can carry 40 kg free and up to 80 kg in total.Passengers travelling in AC 3 Tier or Chair Car are permitted a maximum of 40 kg, which is also the free allowance. First Class and AC 2 Tier passengers are allowed 50 kg free and up to 100 kg in total, while AC First Class passengers can carry 70 kg free and up to 150 kg on payment of charges. The maximum limit includes the free allowance.Vaishnaw said excess luggage beyond the free limit can be carried in the compartment up to the prescribed maximum on payment of charges at 1.5 times the luggage rate. He added that trunks, suitcases and boxes with dimensions up to 100 cm × 60 cm × 25 cm are allowed in passenger compartments. Items exceeding these dimensions must be booked in brake vans or parcel vans.The minister clarified that merchandise is not permitted as personal luggage in compartments and excess luggage beyond the maximum limit must be booked and carried in the brake van, as per Railways' norms.
