New Delhi: After Bihar, a nationwide SIR has been announced. The second phase of voter list revision is also set to begin soon. This phase will be for those states and union territories where assembly elections are scheduled in 2026, 2027, and 2028. The second phase of SIR will be conducted in 12 states and union territories. The Election Commission has also released the schedule for this. For this, the staff will first be trained. Then, starting December 4th, door-to-door polling will be conducted to collect information from voters and prepare a new list. The draft voter list will be presented on December 9th, 2025. The states where SIR will be conducted include Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The Election Commission has already completed a special intensive revision in Bihar. The assembly elections in Bihar are being held immediately after the SIR. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar shared information related to the SIR. During a press conference, Gyanesh Kumar stated that the first phase of the SIR process will begin tomorrow. Explaining the definition of the voter list, the Election Commission stated that, according to Article 326 of the Constitution, a person must be a citizen of India to become a voter. Furthermore, they must be at least 18 years of age, be a permanent resident of the area, and not be disqualified under the law. The Election Commission will launch the second phase of SIR in states with assembly elections in the next three years. These include West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, where assembly elections will be held in 2026. Goa, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh will have assembly elections in 2027, and Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan will have assembly elections in 2028.
