New Delhi: Water minister Parvesh Verma on Saturday said that the govt's efforts to clean the Yamuna have started showing strong and measurable results. In seven months, the fecal coliform (human waste contamination) levels in the river have dropped significantly. "We promised to clean the Yamuna within three years, and I am proud to say that four out of eight sampling points have already reached the permissible limit," said Verma. Fecal coliform is a key indicator of untreated sewage entering a water body. Until 2024, these levels in several stretches of the Yamuna were alarmingly high. Previously, DJB could treat only about 400 MGD (million gallons per day) of sewage, while the rest was flowing untreated into the river. The govt has now intercepted major drains that discharge untreated sewage into the river and implemented strict real-time monitoring and quality compliance for every Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to ensure that untreated water never enters the drainage system. At least 20 lakh metric tonnes of silt from key drains were removed, improving flow and preventing pollutant build-up. According to the latest report by Delhi Pollution Control Committee, there has been a 90% reduction in fecal coliform levels in the Yamuna compared to 2024. Hitting back at the govt, AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj said, "Delhi govt's own pollution report proves Yamuna water is unfit for both drinking and bathing. BJP's lies are dangerous; drinking Yamuna water could endanger the lives of children and pregnant women." "To gain votes in Bihar, BJP govt is deceiving Purvanchali devotees and putting their lives at risk," he added. Responding to Bharadwaj's remarks, the minister said, "He selectively showed the 9 Oct DPCC report but did not mention that during his tenure, locations like Asgarpur had fecal coliform levels as high as 80 lakh.
