Srinagar, Oct 25: Member of Parliament (MP) from Srinagar, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, on Saturday said that "repeated disregard" for the people's mandate could compel citizens to explore political alternatives in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters here, Ruhullah said the people had given a clear majority to one party after the elections, but the decision was not respected. "When the public mandate is set aside within a year, people naturally begin to question it," he said, adding, "Trust, once broken, will make people look elsewhere." Mehdi said he would not campaign for the National Conference candidate in the Budgam Assembly by-election, saying his decision was based on principles rather than politics. Commenting on the recent Rajya Sabha elections, the Srinagar MP said he was unaware of who voted or cross-voted, adding, "The Chief Minister may have the information, but he has chosen not to disclose it. This is not private property; this is public trust, and people have the right to know." He said transparency was necessary to end confusion among legislators and citizens. "If there has been any deviation from the people's mandate, it should be made public so that doubts are cleared," he added.
