Srinagar, Oct 23: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Kulgam, Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami on Thursday said obituary references in the Assembly should not become customary. He said there is no wrong in evaluating the contributions of individuals who have served in public life, provided it is done with due respect and decorum. Speaking on the first day of obituary references in the autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Tarigami said all members who have held responsibilities in various capacities, in the Upper House, in the Assembly, and elsewhere, have contributed to public service. "I would like to say that an obituary reference does not mean we do not learn lessons, or that we should avoid discussion or refrain from drawing insights from the occasion. Respect must be maintained, and any comments should be made with decorum," he said. The CPI(M) leader added, "When representatives elected by the people participate in an obituary motion debate, decorum and recognition are essential, whether in private or public settings. But this does not mean we cannot evaluate matters or take lessons from issues that remain relevant today." He recalled some of the departed members, including Gulchain Singh Charak, who, he said, had a vision for the Dogra society, culture, and language, guided by historical understanding rather than personal ambition. They "Other respected members, like Pandithpuri Sahib, Shaheen Sahib, Sardar Sahib, and Arora Sahib, have played important roles. We must acknowledge their contributions, adaptability, and collaborative spirit, which often drive progress," he said.
