PDP to support NC candidate as 'third preference' to keep BJP out: Mehbooba

Srinagar, Oct 23: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said her party will support the National Conference (NC) candidate as a "third preference" in the Rajya Sabha elections to block the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from gaining a foothold in Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing a press conference here, Mehbooba said the ongoing Assembly session began in a "constructive spirit", but added that several critical issues, particularly those linked to land rights and the regularisation of daily wagers, require immediate legislative attention. She said the government's recent actions have created deep anxiety among local landowners, particularly hotel operators and leaseholders in Kashmir. "The leases of several hotels in Kashmir are under threat. People who have been running these establishments for generations are being told their leases will be cancelled and auctioned off," she said. "These moves undermine the very essence of the constitutional safeguards promised to Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370." The PDP chief that after Article 370 was removed, the main concern was to protect J&K's land and identity. Unfortunately, the government's current approach does the opposite, she said. Mufti said the PDP has introduced a bill in the Assembly aimed at securing ownership rights for locals over houses, shops, and hotels. "Poor families living in their homes or running small shops deserve ownership rights. Similarly, local hotel owners who have been in business for decades must not be dispossessed," she said, adding that the proposed legislation seeks to institutionalise those protections. Mehbooba said she has personally requested NC chief Dr Farooq Abdullah to extend support for the bill. "I spoke to Dr Farooq and urged him to back our bill. The NC has a majority in the Assembly, and this is about safeguarding our people. When I first proposed this, some labelled it 'Land Jihad', but I hope sanity will prevail," she said. Turning to the Rajya Sabha elections, the former CM said her party has decided to extend support to the NC's third candidate, Shammi Oberoi, as part of a "broader strategy" to keep the BJP out. "We will cast our three votes in favour of the NC's third candidate. This decision is guided purely by the need to ensure that the BJP does not capture the fourth seat and to make sure no one blames us for it," she said. She urged the NC to ensure both the Land Rights Bill and the Daily Wagers Regularisation Bill are passed during the current Assembly session.
