Berhampur: A day after police arrested 12 people, including former Berhampur MLA Bikram Kumar Panda and former mayor Shiva Shankar Das, in connection with the murder of senior advocate and BJP leader Pitabash Panda, Berhampur MLA K Anil Kumar said he only recently became aware of their involvement in an election petition filed against him in the Orissa high court.The petition, filed by Manoj Kumar Panda, challenges the sworn affidavit submitted by Anil Kumar during the general election. Manoj alleged that the MLA did not disclose his actual assets and urged the court to disqualify him. "I didn't know Panda until the police revealed he was employed by the former mayor," said Anil Kumar.Police said, Shiva Shankar Das filed the case through his employee, while Bikram Kumar Panda provided financial and logistical support via his associate Madan Mohan Dalei, who was also arrested in connection with Pitabash's murder when the plot was uncovered. SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M said on Wednesday that political conspiracy was one of the motives behind the brutal killing.Both Bikram and Shiva Shankar allegedly believed that Anil Kumar's election would be invalidated, as the petition hearing had reached an advanced stage.In the event of a by-election in Berhampur, Bikram planned to contest for the MLA seat with Shiva Shankar's support. In return, Bikram would back Shiva Shankar in the upcoming mayoral election. As the petition neared resolution, they allegedly sought to eliminate Pitabash to avoid suspicion during any potential by-election, police said.Since the case is sub-judice, Anil Kumar refrained from sharing further details but maintained that he did not conceal any assets in his affidavit."I'm shocked to learn about their future plans surrounding my election petition," said Anil Kumar, who was elected for the first time on a BJP ticket in the 2024 assembly election. He defeated five-time MLA and BJD candidate Ramesh Chandra Chaupatnaik.
