Kolkata: Bengal BJP netas, who were asked by the state unit chief, Samik Bhattacharya, to treat the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) as a "do or die" mission, have decided to increase the number of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) camps across the state ahead of the poll campaigns.While BJP netas denied any link between the CAA camps and the upcoming SIR exercise to be conducted by the Election Commission, sources said the initiative would help identify fake voters while assisting refugees applying under the CAA.BJP's general secretary (organisation), B L Santhosh, on Wednesday urged party members to conduct an intensive CAA exercise in the coming months. Camps will be organised in the border-sharing districts with a higher concentration of people who have taken shelter in India. "There is no specific number of camps to be held. However, the exercise will continue to assist people," said a BJP neta."Our declared stance is to identify illegal immigrants and grant citizenship to Hindus from Bangladesh who took shelter in India following religious persecution in the neighbouring country. We support the deletion of illegal immigrants' names from the voters' list. We will assist the govt in this and hold camps. We will even offer financial assistance if required," said Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya.Alleging that the state govt is delaying the census exercise, Bhattacharya said that census data forms the foundation for the electoral roll. "Trinamool is delaying the process to gain political mileage from it," he said. "We are witnessing a similar pattern in their reaction to the census exercise and the SIR. Their netas also know that lakhs of illegal immigrants have entered India," he added.Bhattacharya, who last week advised his party colleagues not to treat the SIR as "just another political assignment," warned that lapses at the field level could result in a "grim situation" after the 2026 assembly polls. He cautioned that his party colleagues might not even have an office to sit in if the next assembly election results turn adverse. On Friday, the party's Bengal unit election in-charge, Bhupendra Yadav, is scheduled to meet district functionaries to assess preparedness for campaigns and organisational strength at the booth level.
