Hyderabad: Mohammed Ahmed, the 38-year-old from Khairatabad, has sent distressing videos revealing that he is trapped in the Russian army, and forced to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war against his will. In the background of one video, the blast of rockets and the sound of gunfire can be heard, highlighting the imminent danger he faces.Indian govt officials said that at least 27 Indians are currently serving in the Russian army, and the govt is actively working on their repatriation. Ahmed recorded the videos in the army uniform he was compelled to wear. In his first video, sent on Oct 16, Ahmed explained that he was forcibly drafted into the Russian forces and expressed fear for his life. In the second video, he was heard saying: "I have failed in my attempts to convince the people here that I am not keen on fighting in the war. I showed them that I hurt my leg, but they do not seem to be bothered." Ahmed added that he and others would have to walk for five days to reach the frontline at the border, cautioning, "To my knowledge, no one who went there has returned." He also revealed that he tried to escape by jumping from an army vehicle, fracturing his leg in the process, but the commanders reportedly told him he would still be sent to the border. The embassy of India in Moscow, responding to Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, confirmed that it had shared Ahmed's details with Russian authorities and requested his early discharge and safe repatriation. "The embassy has been following up all cases of Indian nationals in the Russian Army on a priority. We will keep the family informed on any further updates regarding Ahmed," the embassy said in an email. Union minister of state for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh had informed the Rajya Sabha (on July 24) that 127 Indian nationals had been recruited into the Russian armed forces. Of these, 98 had discontinued service, while 13 remain, with 12 reportedly missing. Singh said the Indian govt had engaged the Russian authorities at the highest levels to ensure the safety, well-being, and early discharge of all Indian nationals.
