Pune: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said he had not seen in his life more confused politicians than the present opposition members, in a reference to a delegation meeting state election officials for two consecutive days. The opposition is creating a perception of unfair polls, knowing they would face defeat in the electoral battle for civic bodies in Maharashtra, Fadnavis said.A day after meeting chief electoral officer S Chockalingam, the delegation, including Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray, former state NCP (SP) chief Jayant Patil and Congress stalwart Balasaheb Thorat, met election commissioner Dinesh Waghmare in Mumbai on Wednesday. MNS chief Raj Thackeray also accompanied the MVA team. NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, who attended a meeting with Chockalingam, skipped the interaction with Waghmare."They all are senior politicians, but I was shocked that none of them have the knowledge of who is the right authority to take up the issues they are raising. On Tuesday, they met Chockalingam and realised that he had no role in conducting civic polls. There is a statutory election commission to hold those elections. Realising their mistake, they went to meet Waghmare today, but still they looked confused about what demands they should put forward," Fadnavis told media persons in Solapur. The CM further said Sharad Pawar is the only politician who understood that these meetings would not produce the desired result and therefore, he did not go with the opposition members on Wednesday.After the debacle in the assembly poll, the opposition has been levelling 'vote theft' allegations against the govt. It has also demanded the state election commission postpone the civic polls until the issues related to the voters' list are resolved.To this, Fadnavis said, "Ideally, the opposition should have accepted the defeat (in the assembly poll) and get ready to go to people again in the civic elections. However, knowing that they would face another defeat, it is now creating a perception of unfair polls."The opposition had even invited Mahayuti members to join the delegation. "We are also in favour of free and fair elections. We are also supporting the demand that the voters' list be rectified. The duplications of names have persisted for the last 20 years, and I have been raising this issue," the CM said.Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde also targeted the MVA, saying it has already conceded defeat and now is trying to find a reason to cry foul. "When the opposition alliance won more seats than us in the Lok Sabha poll, it had no complaints against the election commission and EVMs. All the complaints began only after the assembly election results. It is raising doubts over EVMs, but these were introduced by Congress and not us," Shinde told media persons in Satara.
