DARJEELING/JALPAIGURI/KOLKATA: At least 28 people died, most of them in Mirik, as constant downpour in north Bengal between Saturday night and early on Sunday triggered landslides, washed away bridges and caused extensive flooding across the hills and plains. Darjeeling received 261mm rain in 24 hours from 8am on Saturday. Cooch Behar got 192mm and Jalpaiguri 172mm during the period. The incessant rain and damaged roads left many tourists and residents stranded.Mirik, Jorebunglow, Sukhiapokhri, Maneybhanjang (all in Darjeeling district) and Falakata (in Alipurduar) were among the worst-hit.
