Kerala CM condoles demise of veteran journalist TJS George

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 3 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today expressed deep grief over the demise of veteran journalist and author Thayil Jacob Sony George (TJS George), who passed away in Bengaluru at the age of 97. In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said TJS George was a distinguished editor and a fearless voice in Indian journalism, whose career became a defining chapter in the history of Indian media. "TJS George was a proud contribution from Kerala to Indian and global journalism. He always stood for fearless and impartial reporting and upheld democratic values even during the Emergency. He was a courageous proponent of liberal journalism and consistently opposed tendencies that undermined freedom and democracy," Vijayan said. Apart from being an eminent editor, George was also a prolific columnist and writer. His acclaimed works include biographies of M.S. Subbulakshmi and V.K. Krishna Menon, among others. He began his career with The Free Press Journal before going on to hold senior editorial positions and contribute columns to leading international media outlets. His regular columns in The Indian Express earned wide readership and recognition. George was the founding editor of Asiaweek and was widely respected as a global journalist known for his fearless style. He was also the first editor in independent India to be imprisoned for exercising freedom of expression. The Chief Minister recalled that the Kerala government had honoured him with the 'Swadeshabhimani Award', recognising his lifelong contributions to journalism.
