Srinagar, Sept 25: People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said the ongoing protests in Ladakh were a direct outcome of the central government's "wrong policies" pursued since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. She said Ladakhis, known for their peaceful nature, had been compelled to agitate as New Delhi continued to ignore their genuine concerns. Mufti said Ladakhis had initially welcomed the 2019 move, hoping for empowerment, but the opposite happened. "In 2019, when the special status was illegally and unconstitutionally removed, there was initially a wave of happiness among Ladakhis as they thought they would get more powers and rights. But the exact opposite happened," she said. The PDP president said the August 2019 decision was aimed at depriving the people of J&K and Ladakh of their land, culture, identity, jobs and resources. "Ladakhis have now understood this. They even feel that perhaps when they were with Jammu and Kashmir, they were safer than they are now," she said. She said Ladakhis feared losing everything without Sixth Schedule protections. "Yesterday was simply an outburst. Their patience ran out. For years, the central government and the Home Ministry have been making promises, but they now see these as lies and empty slogans. That is why, for the first time, violence took place in Ladakh," she said. Calling for introspection in Delhi, the former J&K CM said, "The Centre must reflect on how a peaceful place like Ladakh, which remained calm even when situations in Kashmir and Jammu were very bad and which played an important role during the Kargil war, has now caught fire. The answer lies in the wrong policies of the government since 2019." Referring to environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, Mehbooba said he has always adopted peaceful, Gandhian methods. On the government's promises of trains to Pahalgam and four-lane highways to Baltal, Mufti cautioned that Ladakh would face the same ecological destruction seen in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. She said outsiders were now eyeing Ladakh's tourism and solar energy potential, threatening its land and culture. Rejecting to the BJP's charge that Congress instigated the protests, the PDP chief said it was a spontaneous people's movement. "BJP is now realising that their post-2019 Kashmir policy has failed completely, not just in J&K but across the country and even internationally. To hide their failures, they want scapegoats, so they blame Congress," she said.
