Hyderabad: Opposition vice-presidential candidate Justice B Sudershan Reddy Monday said democracy in India was under serious threat if current electoral practices continued unchecked.Expressing concern over what he called 'alarming trends,' he criticised the Election Commission's approach and said the credibility of elections -- the foundation of democracy -- was at stake.Addressing a press conference organised by Telangana Congress, the former Supreme Court judge recalled the early years of Independent India, when the voter list was the first democratic exercise. "People became voters first and citizens later," he said, underlining the centrality of free and fair elections. He posed a sharp question: "How can democracy endure if the voter list is prepared according to someone's whims and fancies?"Justice Reddy argued that laws or regulations should never be framed simply because the govt commanded a majority. "We do not live in a majoritarian state. Our society is multilingual, multicultural and multi-religious. The Constitution is designed to limit powers, not grant them," he observed.Echoing concerns raised by chief minister A Revanth Reddy, he said the Constitution could be undermined without being rewritten. "As Ambedkar reminded us, even the best Constitution can fail if those who enforce it are not virtuous," he noted.On his own candidacy, Justice Reddy said his decision to contest the vice-presidential election was consistent with his long engagement with the Constitution. "For the past 53 years, I have lived and worked with the Constitution of India. This is not merely a political position. Both the President and Vice-President must swear to defend and protect the Constitution of India as established by law," he said.He stressed that his entry into the race does not mean joining politics. "I am not affiliated with any party and have no intention of joining one. But to call me 'non-political' would be misleading. Every citizen who upholds the Constitution holds political views," he explained. Justice Reddy added that he has written to all MPs seeking their support.Highlighting his philosophy, he said he consistently speaks on civil liberties, social justice and directive principles. "When I was asked about labels, I replied -- read the Directive Principles of the Constitution.
