Patna: The Election Commission on Thursday issued notices to Vaishali MP Veena Devi and her husband, MLC Dinesh Prasad Singh, for allegedly possessing two separate voter ID cards and being registered as voters in multiple constituencies in Muzaffarpur district. Devi is an MP from Chirag Paswan's LJP (Ram Vilas) while Singh is a MLC from JD(U). Both have been asked to submit their replies by Aug 16. The notice issued to the MP by the electoral registration officer (ERO) of Muzaffarpur assembly constituency read, "It has come to our notice that your name appears as a voter in the SIR draft roll at booth number 325 (EPIC number UTO1134543) of Sahebganj assembly constituency and also at booth number 371 (EPIC number GSB1037894) of Muzaffarpur assembly constituency. Prior to SIR too, your name was found registered at two places." The notice directed her to respond by Aug 16 for further action. A similar notice was separately issued to her husband. The development followed allegations by leader of the opposition in the Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, who claimed that both leaders hold dual EPICs and are registered as voters in two different assembly constituencies in Muzaffarpur district. Alleging large-scale discrepancies in the preparation of the voter list, Tejashwi said, "This is part of a conspiracy aimed at ensuring the victory of NDA candidates. How did they become voters in two different assembly constituencies? That means they must have signed two different enumeration forms. Is this not electoral fraud by the EC to ensure NDA's victory? Will the EC accept these irregularities and its mistakes in SIR?" Tejashwi also questioned how the duo managed to procure two separate EPIC numbers. Defending herself, Veena Devi said she had applied long ago to have her name deleted from one voter list. "I don't know how my name still exists at two places in the voter's list. This is totally the fault of the BLO and Election Commission employee," she said. Devi added that she had submitted another application seeking deletion of her name from one list after the controversy resurfaced. Singh has not yet issued any clarification.
