Mumbai: Furious at being served "rotten" dal and rice, Shiv Sena's Buldhana MLA Sanjay Gaikwad assaulted a staffer and manhandled another at the Akashwani MLAs' hostel canteen in Colaba Tuesday evening. A video of him forcing the staffers to smell the dal and hitting and punching one of them went viral, drawing condemnation not only from the opposition but also from CM Fadnavis and his party chief, DCM Eknath Shinde, reports Chaitanya Marpakwar.The video shows Gaikwad, in a vest and towel, continuing to hit the staffer after he apologizes. No complaint has been filed.Gaikwad said he had ordered food in his room and rushed down after he found it "rotten". He said he had complained about the food there four times. "I am an MLA but I'm also a fighter. When people don't listen even after being told several times, Balasaheb Thackeray has taught us how to deal with them, and I have used those ways," he said.Justifying his assault of an MLAs' hostel canteen staffer, Shiv Sena MLA from Buldhana Sanjay Gaikwad said he had complained about the food there four times earlier. Gaikwad said he had ordered dal, rice and two chapatis in his room at the hostel. "I had one bite and felt bad. When I had the second, I puked. I was so furious that I walked out of the room and into the canteen in a vest and towel. When I asked the staff to eat the same dal and rice, they said it was true it was not fit for eating," he said."I lost it when they didn't listen after being told many times. They are playing with lives of people by serving rotten food," Gaikwad said. He alleged the canteen serves "dal that is four days old and chicken that is over 10 days old."Further justifying the violence, he said at Vidhan Bhavan, "This contractor has been here for thirty years. So when nothing else worked, I had to take things into my own hands. I'm a judo and karate champion, and a wrestling champion too. So I can use any means. When the administration doesn't work despite repeated reminders, what will people do? They will take law into their own hands. If an MLA complains and nothing is done, should I give up my life? I'm not such a big Gandhian. I have no regrets, and I don't feel bad about this." He added that he would take up the issue in the legislative assembly through a point of information.The canteen manager said it was their duty to take complaints from MLAs seriously but did not confirm if the staffer who was hit would file any police complaint. The canteen was being cleaned up immediately after the incident.While all MLAs condemned Gaikwad's assault, many said the canteen food at MLA hostels was indeed of poor quality. "No MLA should take law into their own hands, but the fact is the contractors supply poor-quality food and it is not fit for eating. Serious action must be taken against the contractors," NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad said. Canteen staffers said the staffers targeted by the MLA, Yogesh Shetty and Nikesh Shetty, were undergoing medical treatment.
