Pune: Employees working with IT companies in Hinjewadi have requested their managements to allow them work from home until Wednesday (July 9) when the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited will restore electricity supply to the technology park. The firms have been experiencing a complete power outage since Sunday after a high-tension underground transmission cable was damaged during a routine maintenance work."Around 90 companies are affected; so it is up to them now to give work from home or operate on power back-up," said Pawanjit Mane, an office bearer of Forum for IT Employees (FITE).The association has sought intervention from NCP(SP) MP Supriya Sule whose Lok Sabha constituency Baramati covers Hinjewadi. "This will also prevent employees from being stranded in every day heavy traffic," FITE said in a letter sent to Sule on Monday. Typically, IT employees are needed to work from the office for 12 days a month. However, some projects require staffers to be in the office on all working days.The Hinjewadi Industries Association too has advised the companies to agree to the employees' demand. "However, it is the individual decision of the companies whether to give blanket work from home to all employees. In addition, there is road work going on in phase two between Lakshmi Circle and Wipro Circle. So, it will reduce the stress on traffic if employees do not come to their offices," Shankar Salkar, deputy head of operations of the association, said.The maintenance work began at 11am on Sunday and the supply was supposed to resume three hours later. However, the damage to the cable operated by Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) resulted in the complete blackout in Hinjewadi. MSETCL and MSEDCL fully restored power for around 52,000 residential consumers at 4am on Monday, but there are still fluctuations and interruptions for shorter durations. Residents in Hinjewadi MIDC area, IT park, Maan, and Marunji, among others, were impacted."There was a power failure in a housing complex near Megapolis Circle in phase 3 at 12.30pm on Monday. So I went to the office as the mobile hotspot was not working properly and I also needed to recharge the phones and battery banks," an IT employee, Atriyo Daripa, said.Before MSEDCL could resume supply through regular channels, it was providing 63 MW of electricity from other substations. However, the electricity demand from high-tension industrial consumers was too high, due to which the alternative requirement could not be fulfilled, MSEDCL said in a statement.
