Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday said that 33 per cent reservation for women in the Assembly was likely to come into force, with the elections expected to be held in late 2028 or early 2029. He said that Congress would go a step further by allocating 60 tickets to women candidates for the polls, surpassing the mandated 33 per cent quota. Speaking at the launch of Vana Mahotsavam at the agricultural university in Rajendranagar, the CM said the number of Assembly constituencies in Telangana would increase from 119 to 153 after the upcoming delimitation exercise. Based on the 33 per cent reservation, 51 seats will be reserved for women, but the Congress government will ensure 60 women are fielded in the elections. As part of Vana Mahotsavam 2025, Revanth Reddy has set a target of planting 18 crore saplings this year. Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for people to plant saplings in the name of their mothers, Revanth Reddy urged every household to plant two saplings, one in the name of the mother and one for their children, and to nurture trees like their own children. "If we protect nature, nature will protect us," Revanth Reddy said. Stressing that women empowerment was a core commitment of the Congress government, Revanth Reddy outlined the initiatives taken up by his government. These include assigning women responsibilities such as managing government schools and solar energy plants. He stated that '21,000 crore loans had been disbursed to women self-help groups (SHGs) this year. The CM highlighted the free RTC bus travel for women and a scheme where women were encouraged to lease 1,000 buses to the RTC, making them bus owners. Women's SHGs are being provided marketing spaces in Hyderabad's expensive Hitec City to showcase their products to multinational companies. Reiterating the government's mission to make one crore women 'crorepatis' (millionaires), CM Revanth said SHGs will also be formed in urban areas. "Our goal is to empower women in every field and ensure they lead a life of dignity and self-respect under the Indiramma regime," he said.
