Kolkata: The special CBI court on Friday took exception to the probe into the murder of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar and questioned the agency for the lapses it noticed."I have read the charge sheet. The evidence on which you filed the charge sheet against the 18 individuals was available to you two years ago. Is this a joke?" said Judge Rohan Sinha, who took exception to the CBI's plea to provide copies of the charge sheet in a month. Judge Sinha pointed out that the right to further investigation did not mean the agency could be negligent. The agency submitted a supplementary charge sheet on Wednesday against 18 people, including Beleghata MLA Paresh Pal and councillors Swapan Samaddar and Papiya Ghosh.As the judge listened to the argument of the CBI, the agency's lawyer said it wanted warrants to be issued against the accused. The judge noted that the accused had not absconded. He then asked if the agency felt that the accused were planning to flee in the past four years. The agency's lawyer said the accused had cooperated with the agency so far. "When the previous investigating officer summoned them, they appeared," said the CBI counsel.At this juncture, the judge asked the agency to issue summons to the 18 accused people. The investigating officer will deliver the summons, and the accused will have to be present in court on July 18. But the judge maintained that whether the accused would be granted bail or not would be decided, based on the merit of the case after their appearance. Sarkar's brother Biswajit, who deposed before court on Friday, said that he is not happy with the CBI investigation.
