Lucknow: With the BJP initiating process for the election of state presidents in Uttarakhand, Maharashtra and West Bengal, the focus has also shifted on politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh where organisational polls and appointment of a new state chief are due ahead of the election of a new BJP national president. The BJP appointed Union minister Kiren Rijiju as the election officer for Maharashtra, while Union minister of state Harsh Malhotra was tasked with overseeing state president elections in Uttarakhand. Likewise, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad was made the poll in-charge of West Bengal.Once completed, the election process would take the tally of elected BJP state presidents to 17, two short of the required number of 19 for the election of the national president.Organisationally, the BJP recognises 36 states. The election of a national president thus requires the support of at least 19 state presidents. All eyes would be on UP and Madhya Pradesh that would determine the electoral positioning of the BJP in the run-up to the next key battles, including the upcoming Bihar assembly elections.BJP sources said that UP is expected to attain the centre stage soon. UP isn't just any state -- it sends the largest number of MPs (80) to the Lok Sabha and has historically been the launchpad for national ambitions, especially for the BJP."BJP has a democratic setup. The appointment of a new state president would be done accordingly," said UP BJP spokesperson HC Srivastava.Experts said that the BJP has been striving to strike a caste balance in UP, especially after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, in which the opposition, primarily the Samajwadi Party and its ally Congress, successfully floated the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) narrative, which is said to have dented the BJP while bringing its tally down from 62 to 33 in UP.According to experts, the BJP is seeking to sharpen its focus on east and Bundelkhand region, besides consolidating its support in the stronghold of west and central UP. A senior BJP functionary said that Pasmanda Muslim outreach, women voters, and youth engagement would be the key electoral strategies of the BJP.The BJP had appointed Union minister Piyush Goyal as the election officer to oversee the election of the new state president in Jan. However, the process got delayed even as the saffron outfit makes exhaustive calculations to strike a balance for projecting a new face which would steer the party's poll prospects in the run-up to the panchayat elections due next year and the state polls in 2027.The appointment of Goyal, a senior and trusted aide of PM Narendra Modi, as election officer is seen as reflective of the direct involvement of the party's top brass in reshaping UP BJP's next phase.
